Who Is Abraham? The Father of Faith

The Call of Abraham

Originally named Abram, Abraham lived in Ur of the Chaldees when God called him to leave his homeland and journey to an unknown land. God promised to make him a great nation, bless him, and through him bless all the families of the earth.

Abraham's willingness to leave everything familiar based solely on God's word established the pattern of faith that would define his life and earn him the title "father of faith" throughout Scripture.

The Promise and the Wait

God promised Abraham descendants as numerous as the stars, yet he and his wife Sarah remained childless well into old age. The long wait tested their faith and led to missteps, including the birth of Ishmael through Sarah's servant Hagar.

When Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety, God fulfilled His promise through the miraculous birth of Isaac. This child of promise would carry forward the covenant that would ultimately lead to the birth of Jesus Christ.

The Test of Faith

Abraham's greatest test came when God asked him to sacrifice Isaac on Mount Moriah. This agonizing command seemed to contradict God's promise, yet Abraham obeyed, trusting that God could even raise the dead. At the last moment, God provided a ram as a substitute.

This event foreshadowed God's own sacrifice of His Son. Just as Abraham was willing to give his only son, God the Father would give His only begotten Son for the salvation of the world. Abraham's faith made him the spiritual ancestor of all who believe.
