Is Jesus God? What Does the Bible Say?

The Bible presents Jesus Christ as fully God and fully man, a doctrine that has been central to Christian faith since the earliest days of the church. Multiple passages affirm His divine nature, beginning with the opening of John's Gospel which declares that the Word was with God and was God, and that this Word became flesh in Jesus.

Jesus made claims that only God could make. He forgave sins, accepted worship, and declared Himself to be the great I AM — the same name God revealed to Moses. In John 10:30, He stated plainly that He and the Father are one, a claim His opponents understood as an assertion of deity.

The apostle Paul affirmed Christ's deity in Colossians 2:9, writing that in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. Thomas, upon seeing the risen Christ, exclaimed "My Lord and my God" — and Jesus did not correct him. The consistent testimony of Scripture is that Jesus is the eternal Son of God, the visible image of the invisible God, through whom all things were created and in whom all things hold together.
