Bible Verses About Fear

Fear is a universal human experience, yet the Bible contains over 300 commands to not be afraid. God does not scold us for feeling fear but consistently reminds us that His presence and power are greater than anything we face. These verses equip us to confront fear with faith.

Isaiah 41:10

Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

God addresses our fear with His presence and His identity. He does not simply tell us not to fear; He gives us reasons why fear need not have the final word.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Paul traces fear back to its source and declares it is not from God. The Spirit God gives produces power, love, and clear thinking, all antidotes to fear.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

David answers fear with rhetorical questions. When God is your light, salvation, and strength, the logical conclusion is that no one remains worthy of your fear.

Psalm 56:3

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

This verse does not pretend fear does not exist. It acknowledges the reality of fear and makes a deliberate choice to redirect trust toward God in that very moment.

Joshua 1:9

Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

God commands courage not as a feeling but as an act of obedience. The basis for this courage is His promise to accompany us everywhere we go.

Psalm 23:4

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

The darkest valley loses its terror when we recognize who walks beside us. The Shepherd's rod and staff are instruments of both protection and guidance.

Romans 8:15

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Fear enslaves, but the Spirit of adoption liberates. We are no longer slaves cowering before a taskmaster but children calling out to a loving Father.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Moses speaks these words as Israel faces the unknown promised land. The assurance that God will neither fail nor forsake is the ultimate remedy for fear.

1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Fear and love cannot coexist at full strength. As we grow in our understanding of God's perfect love, fear progressively loses its grip on our hearts.

Psalm 34:4

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Deliverance from fear begins with seeking God. David testifies that God not only heard his prayer but actually freed him from every fear that held him captive.
