Bible Verses for Depression

Depression can make the world feel colorless and God feel distant, yet Scripture is filled with voices that know the depths of despair. The psalms especially give words to our pain and point us toward a God who draws near to the brokenhearted. These verses are a lifeline for the weary soul.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

God does not stand at a distance when we are crushed. He draws especially close to those whose hearts are shattered, making brokenness a place of encounter.

Psalm 42:5

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

The psalmist speaks to his own despairing soul, choosing to redirect his gaze toward God. This honest self-dialogue is a model for navigating depression with faith.

Isaiah 61:3

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

God specializes in exchanges: beauty for ashes, joy for mourning, praise for heaviness. He does not waste our pain but transforms it into something fruitful.

Psalm 40:1-2

I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

David describes depression as a horrible pit and miry clay. God's deliverance is not always instant, but it is certain, lifting us to solid ground.

Matthew 11:28

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Jesus extends a personal invitation to the exhausted and overwhelmed. He does not demand performance but offers rest to any who will come to Him.

Psalm 147:3

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.

God is portrayed as a gentle physician who tends to emotional and spiritual wounds. His healing touch reaches the deepest places of our pain.

Romans 8:28

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Even in depression, nothing is wasted. God weaves every thread of our experience into a larger tapestry that serves His good purposes for those who love Him.

Psalm 143:7-8

Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit faileth: hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

This prayer captures the urgency of someone in deep distress. It models how to cry out honestly to God while still lifting the soul in trust.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

Our suffering is not purposeless. The comfort God gives us in our darkest moments equips us to become a source of comfort for others who walk similar paths.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

God is not a distant deity unaware of our struggles. He is very present, immediately accessible, and actively helpful in our moments of deepest trouble.

Isaiah 43:2

When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.

God does not promise we will avoid deep waters or fires, but He promises His presence through them. We will pass through, not drown or be consumed.
