Bible Verses About Patience

Patience is one of the hardest virtues to cultivate because it requires surrendering our timelines to God. Scripture teaches that patience is not passive waiting but active trust in a God whose timing is always perfect. These verses encourage endurance and steadfast faith.

James 5:7-8

Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

James compares patience to farming, where the harvest cannot be rushed. Just as the farmer trusts the seasons, we are called to trust God's sovereign timing.

Psalm 37:7

Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Patience requires resting in God even when the wicked seem to prosper. Comparing our timeline to others only breeds frustration and erodes trust.

Romans 12:12

Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer.

Paul links patience directly to hope and prayer. When tribulation comes, patience is sustained by the joy of what we hope for and the discipline of constant prayer.

Galatians 6:9

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Weariness is the enemy of patience. Paul encourages believers to press on in doing good with the assurance that a harvest is coming at the right time.

Hebrews 10:36

For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Patience is the bridge between obedience and promise. After we have done what God asks, there is often a waiting period before we see the fulfillment.

Proverbs 14:29

He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly.

Patience is portrayed as a mark of deep understanding. The person who takes time before reacting demonstrates wisdom that the impulsive person lacks.

Isaiah 40:31

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Waiting on God is not wasted time but the process through which our strength is renewed. Patient trust produces supernatural endurance.

Lamentations 3:25

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.

God rewards those who wait for Him with His goodness. The waiting itself becomes a season of seeking that deepens our relationship with Him.

Colossians 1:11

Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.

Patience is not produced by human willpower alone. It comes from being strengthened by God's glorious power, and it is accompanied by joy.

Psalm 27:14

Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

David repeats the command to wait, emphasizing its importance. Courage and a strengthened heart are the rewards for those who patiently trust God.
